We recently completed a flat roof solar and battery storage installation for a residential property in Liverpool. The customer wanted to make better use of their available roof space while also storing excess solar energy for use later in the day.
Unlike a standard pitched roof installation, this project required additional planning to make sure the system was positioned correctly, securely mounted and designed for strong long-term performance.
The challenge
Flat roof solar installations need a different approach to traditional pitched roof systems. The panels must be installed at the right angle for solar generation while allowing enough space between rows to prevent self-shading.
This project also required careful consideration of ballast, wind loading, roof structure and safe access for future maintenance. Every part of the design needed to balance performance, safety and long-term reliability.
The flat roof solar system installed
Following a detailed site survey and system design, our in-house team installed 10 × 455W high-efficiency solar panels, giving the property a total system size of 4.55kWp. The system was paired with a 5kW hybrid inverter and 10kWh battery storage, allowing the customer to store excess solar energy generated during the day and use it later when the property needs it most.
The flat roof mounting system was designed to position the panels at the optimum angle for energy generation while keeping the installation secure and compliant. Our team carefully planned the panel layout, spacing and mounting arrangement to maximise solar output while protecting the roof and maintaining a clean, professional finish.
Despite the extra planning involved with a flat roof system, the full installation was completed in just 2 days by our own in-house team. This included installing the mounting system, fitting the solar panels, connecting the hybrid inverter and battery storage, testing the system, commissioning it and completing the customer handover.
The results
The completed installation included 10 × 455W solar panels, a 4.55kWp solar PV system, 5kW hybrid inverter and 10kWh battery storage.
The customer can now generate and store their own renewable electricity, reducing their dependence on the grid and helping protect against rising energy costs. The system is expected to save approximately £1,800 per year.
A flat roof can be an excellent option for solar, but it needs to be designed correctly. Rather than fixing panels directly to roof tiles, specialist mounting systems are used to achieve the right angle for sunlight while keeping the system stable and secure. Panel spacing, wind loading, ballast and maintenance access all need to be considered. When designed properly, a flat roof solar system can deliver excellent performance while making efficient use of available roof space.
Considering solar for a flat roof?
Flat roofs can be an excellent option for solar when they are designed and installed correctly. With the right mounting system, a quality hybrid inverter and battery storage, you can maximise your self-generated electricity and make the most of your available roof space.
At Generating Energy, our experienced in-house team designs every system to suit the property, ensuring safe installation, long-term performance and maximum return on investment.
